Solar for Schools Program

The Solar for Schools Program (SFS) provides financial rebates to Alberta Public School Authorities who install grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on existing school facilities or land in their jurisdiction and complete a student education initiative as part of the Project.

All Alberta schools classified as Public, Separate, Francophone, and Charter by Alberta Education are eligible to participate in the SFS program.

SFS Rebate Rates depend on the total installed capacity in kW: 

Main criteria:

  • Solar array must be new and located on a facility or land wholly owned by the School Authority
  • Solar panels system must be paid for by participating School Authority (any external grant funding is acceptable)
  • All combined funding must not exceed 100% of the total system cost
  • Participating School Authority must own the solar array for the whole life of the Project
  • Solar panels system must be installed by a qualified installer*, and connected to the grid in full compliance with the Alberta’s Micro-generation Regulation
  • Solar panels array size must be more than 2 kW DC (for example, min 10 panels of 200W DC capacity each)
  • All the system components (solar panels, inverters, wiring, racking, combiner boxes, DC disconnect, wiring, etc.) must meet the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) requirements for electrical safety or an equivalent certification to applicable Canadian standards.* is a member of either the Solar Energy Society of Alberta (SESA) or the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA)
