Edmonton Solar Rebates

June 24, 2018.
The City of Edmonton has recently announced plans to launch the Change Homes for Climate – Solar program, which will offer homeowners unique financial incentives to install solar panels for improved energy efficiency on their properties. The initiative is designed to decrease carbon emissions, produce renewable energy and increase the number of high-quality employment opportunities available in Canada’s rapidly growing solar industry.

Offsetting the Expense of Solar Installation for Homeowners

Change Homes for Climate – Solar will provide residential property owners $0.15 per watt to place solar panels on their homes. When coupled with the available $0.90 per watt available through Energy Efficiency Alberta, homeowners can expect to recoup as much as a third of the costs of installing the solar panels on their roofs. Though the $0.15/watt incentive does not apply to commercial or industrial properties, all property owners are eligible for the $0.75/watt Energy Efficiency Alberta incentive.
In addition, to the Change Homes for Climate – Solar incentives, financing tools such as Alberta’s new Property Assessed Clean Energy program and the solar rebates available through Energy Efficiency Alberta are helping encourage the installation of solar panels by making it more realistic from a financial standpoint. Thanks to these innovative perks, homeowners who would not previously have considered installing solar panels due to cost concerns may now find it is well within their reach to do so.

Edmonton Is Leading the Way in the Fight Against Climate Change

According to Change Homes for Climate, homes consume nearly 20 percent of Edmonton’s energy use, in addition to producing 20 percent of its greenhouse gas emissions, making houses a significant contributor to climate change. However, with 2,300 hours of sun shining upon Edmonton in an average year, the city is also uniquely poised to become a national leader in the Canadian government’s push to reduce greenhouse gases by 30 percent below 2005 levels by 2030. Experts estimate that 1 kW of installed solar panels in Edmonton has the potential to produce up to 1,245 kilowatt hours of solar energy per year.

After applying for a city permit to install solar panels on their roofs and getting their solar panels installed, inspected and connected, homeowners can expect to receive a direct deposit of their rebate within 10 to 15 business days. To ensure the eligibility of their project, homeowners can contract with a licensed and qualified solar panel installer who will apply directly to Energy Efficiency Alberta for pre-approval on their behalf.

“The City of Edmonton is committed to taking meaningful, effective action against climate change,” said Councillor Michael Walters. “This solar rebate is an important way for citizens to do their part by reducing their GHG emissions associated with the electricity they use to power lights, appliances and air conditioning. It’s a way for all of us to move our city toward a low-carbon future.”
